How can I take action?

What is at stake

The issue of Biodiversity is less talked about than climate, yet the two issues are interconnected in a global world ecosystem.

The first step to improving the situation is to observe the behaviors of public and private entities, and to eliminate the funding of environmentally harmful practices.

Some traits are known and traceable to poorly governed activities that create environmental harm or damage to biodiversity indicated by alert launchers and sometimes in the impact budgets of stakeholders.

Other situations are more difficult to assess, such as the collateral damage associated with some types of renewable energy.

It is also clear that there is a need to control the state of forests, the primary source of ecosystem and climate stability, and thus avoid activities that cause deforestation.

Visions of sustainability

Sustainable management of Forests has been codified, and impacts are easily measured through satellite observations. The evidence makes it clear who is - or is not - following standards of sustainable forestry work.

Much more controversial is the situation with renewable energy, and in particular hydropower generated by processing dams, with multiple social, environmental and sometimes geopolitical impacts.

there are regulations and programs to support operating enterprises in many business sectors, exclusion activity can therefore be based on objective impact and commitment factors.

Management strategies

The issue of environmental damage is mainly dealt with through the exclusion approach. In fact, funds tend to:

  • exclude investments in Society involved in deforestation operations, especially in indigenous areas. The exclusion strategy is carried out according to key indicators
  • Exclude investments in Society controversial related to incidents of environmental damage or biodiversity destruction
  • Exclude investments in Society related to energy (including renewable) that do not take into consideration the environmental effects of their practices (geothermal, biomass, hydropower ...)
Results and observations

Sixty percent of sustainable funds are monitoring the environmental impacts of their investments by excluding government investments or investments in Society that generate harm to the environment. In detail:

  • 55% exclude Society at the source of Environmental Damage
  • 21% exclude Society involved in Deforestation
  • 6% tests the environmental impacts of new energy technologies according to the "Do no significant harm" principle
  • 6% exclude controversial Society implicated in material damage to biodiversity
